Dick Whipps - Elder

I was born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1943, the oldest of 5 children. My sisters and I were raised by godly Christian parents, and I placed my faith in Jesus Christ and accepted His gift of salvation when I was 6 years old. Following graduation from high school, I attended Ohio State University and graduated in 1967 with the degree Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. While in college, I met Jo Ann Glaze when she came to Columbus from Galion, Ohio, to attend nursing school at Riverside White Cross Hospital. We were married 3 years later and, following my graduation from OSU, we re-located to Spokane, Washington, where I served 3 years in the U.S. Army as a Captain in the Veterinary Corps. Shortly after arriving in Spokane, we became members of Euclid Ave. Baptist Church and were soon involved in youth ministry, choir (Dick), AWANA, and teaching Sunday School. During my Army service, we had 2 daughters, Julie (in 1967) and Corinne (in 1969). They have been the joy of our lives, and both reside now in Oregon after graduating from Corban College in Salem. They are married and have given us 7 beautiful grandchildren. For the past 37 years, I have been a pet animal veterinary practitioner and currently own a pet animal veterinary clinic in Airway Heights. Jo Ann and I have been involved in many areas of church ministry, and I was on the elder board when we elected to re-name our church New Hope Bible Church and re-locate to the Spokane Valley in 1999.

In addition to serving as an elder, I also lead a home group and am a helper in the Children's Ministry on Sunday mornings. I also enjoy music and drama ministries when the opportunities arise. The focus of my ministry has been to provide spiritual leadership and guidance to our congregation, to serve them in any way I can, and to support our Pastors to the best of my ability.

I was born in Twin Falls, Idaho and grew up in the Boise Valley of southern Idaho on a 40 acre ranch near the towns of Roswell and Parma. I accepted the Lord Jesus as my Savior when I was about 12 years old and was baptized shortly afterwards. In high school I began to be an outspoken witness for the Lord, which continues to this day. After graduating from high school in 1945 I attended Multnomah School of the Bible from 1946-1949, Los Angeles Baptist College and Seminary in 1962, and received my Bachelor of Science degree from Spokane Community College in 1967.

I came to New Hope in 1965 and began teaching Sunday school classes and bible studies in 1967. I am currently involved in the ministries of: Bible teaching, home group leading, pastoral visitation, missions, evangelism, and serve as a member of our elder board. It is my desire to build up in the faith those who are in Christ, to encourage those who experience pain and suffering in their lives and to endeavor to keep the unity of joy and fellowship at New Hope.

I enjoy playing the piano, putting in the garden and doing crossword puzzles. My favorite Bible verse is Philippians 4:4 - “Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say rejoice.”

Dan Churchwell - Elder

I grew up in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota.  My parents are dedicated believers and they instilled within me a desire to know God. I put my faith in Christ alone at the age of five during family devotions. I graduated from Northland International University with a double major in Bible and Counseling.  After college I decided to attend Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Minneapolis, graduating in 2001 with a Masters degree in Biblical Studies.

The best thing in my mortal life is my beautiful wife, Julie. We married in the summer of 2001 and have been blessed with three wonderful children. We moved to Orange County, California as I took an Executive Director position for a Christian organization that supplies medical equipment to hospitals and clinics in Third World countries. While in Southern California I did further graduate work in philosophy of religion and ethics at Biola University.

God, through His providential will, moved us to Spokane in March of 2005. I teach at Whitworth University and at the Spokane campus of Moody Bible Institute. My main interests lie in the realm of Historical Theology, Moral Philosophy/Ethics, and Economics.

I enjoy being a part of New Hope’s Elder board and it is exciting to assist in the spiritual growth of God’s people through teaching, counseling, and discipleship.
